Produced by The Lighthouse Trust, Napier (with support from Like Minds, Like Mine and the Mental Health Foundation) Director and editor, Jim Marbrook (2004/05 Carter Center Fellow) In July 2006, the Whanganui District Health Board sold Lake Alice Hospital to a private buyer.
The sale prompted Roy Brown and Susie Crooks (from The Lighthouse Trust) to take on a national project to capture on film one of the blackest periods in New Zealand's medical history.
Their team will be filming at all nine of the old mental asylums that have been in operation over the last 100 - 150 years, before they are pulled down or lost forever. Susie Crooks said they were interested in challenging some of the attitudes that have been perpetuated through the practices of psychiatry in the asylums
